Very rare sewing table piano from the Biedermeier period,
The case was restored about 30 years ago, the side handles and the hinges are not original from the time, in 2023 the console and the mechanism were restored. The instrument is difficult to tune and is currently tuned to the lowest note = G. The sewing box piano is more of a museum piece and would be an enrichment for the discerning Biedermeier collector.
Unfortunately, the instrument cannot be shipped due to its sensitivity and must be picked up in Munich.
What is a “sewing table piano”?
Technically speaking, it is a small fortepiano that is built into a sewing table or, as in this case, a sewing box. Compared to their “big siblings”, the upright pianos only have a limited range of a few octaves, but can be moved around the salon much more easily than a grand or upright piano due to their compact housing. The sewing box with the integrated fortepiano is more reminiscent of a traveling trunk with its side handles. Above the strings is a removable insert with all kinds of compartments, some of which can be closed with lids. There is a mirror in the lid. It was up to the young ladies whether they filled the compartments with sewing or hairdressing utensils.
